Turkish industrial and technological development

Turkish industrial leaders and government officials have focused on integrating high-technology and defense capabilities into the national economy. Initially, discussions centered on the need to align Ankara’s industrial requirements with NATO’s defense procurement plans, alongside concerns regarding economic uncertainty, inflation, and the necessity of low-carbon production to meet European Union standards.

Subsequent efforts have emphasized strengthening diplomatic and economic ties through ambassadorial receptions to foster investment. The government has also highlighted a strategic push to ascend the global high-technology value chain, leveraging an innovation ecosystem of R&D centers and technoparks. This technological advancement is particularly prominent in the defense sector, where Turkey is expanding from military UAV systems into the domestic production of helicopters, satellites, and sea platforms.

More recently, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has framed these developments under the ‘Turkey Century’ project, asserting that the nation has established strong foundations in defense, technology, health, and agriculture. To support these long-term objectives, a Public Investment Program for 2024–2028 has been issued, prioritizing fiscal discipline, inflation reduction, and public spending savings to complement private sector investments.

Economic officials, including Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek, have noted that service exports and production are supporting the external balance, despite an annualized current account deficit of $40.7 billion in July. Efforts continue to enhance global competitiveness through high-tech, value-added production and increased cooperation between the business community and foreign missions.
