Turkish municipal literacy initiatives for children
Overview
Turkish municipalities have implemented various initiatives to promote literacy and reading habits among children.
In Manavgat, a mobile library service was launched to deliver books to remote mountain villages. Concurrently, the Bağcılar district in Istanbul opened an open-air library featuring reading sessions and creative workshops for preschoolers and early elementary students. In Maltepe, the municipality hosted a reading event for children as part of these local efforts.
Expanding these efforts, the Osmangazi Municipality in Bursa has continued its "Osmangazi Okuyor" (Osmangazi is Reading) project, which aims to spread reading culture from urban centers to rural areas. The project recently brought mobile library services to the Yeniceabat neighborhood. During these sessions, children receive instruction on the history of libraries and the importance of reading. The program also features books written by children themselves through previous "Little Authors Workshops," aimed at encouraging creative writing.
