Turkish municipal water infrastructure upgrades

In late July 2026, Muğla Metropolitan Municipality began a project to replace about 3 km of aging drinking‑water pipe in Fethiye, extending service to nearby neighbourhoods and aiming to secure reliable supply for the next decade.

A week later, several other Turkish municipalities announced parallel upgrades: Kırıkkale installed a new storm‑water pipe to curb garden flooding; Bursa built a large drinking‑water reservoir to serve ten neighbourhoods; Mersin expanded rain‑water drainage with thousands of metres of pipe and hundreds of pits; and Mardin replaced a 10‑km old steel water main with ductile‑iron pipe. These initiatives reflect a broader push across Turkey’s cities to modernise water supply and drainage systems, reduce losses, and improve resilience against population growth and extreme weather.

Together, the projects illustrate an expanding municipal effort to address aging infrastructure, water scarcity, and flood risks through extensive pipe replacements, new reservoirs, and enhanced drainage networks.
