Turkish municipalities establishing disaster coordination
Overview
Municipalities in Turkey are opening new disaster coordination centers to improve emergency management and resilience.
In Dilovası, the municipality opened a center to centralize the management of personnel, heavy machinery, and logistics. This facility is intended to facilitate real-time incident tracking and information sharing in coordination with the Kocaeli Governor’s Office and AFAD. Mayor Ramazan Ömeroğlu noted that the center follows the establishment of a Disaster Affairs Directorate in May 2023, citing lessons from the February 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes.
Similarly, the Balıkesir Metropolitan Municipality opened its Disaster Coordination Center (AKOM) to manage crises from a single hub. Mayor Ahmet Akın stated the center aims to coordinate efforts between state institutions, municipalities, and local teams to protect citizens.
