Turkish political engagement with Devlet Bahçeli

Political discussions involving Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) Chairman Devlet Bahçeli have centered on regional peace and domestic political structures. In August, leaders and business figures from Hakkari met with Bahçeli in Ankara to discuss the “National Solidarity, Brotherhood, and Democracy” framework. The group emphasized that regional peace is essential for economic development. This meeting also involved a clarification regarding a Kurdish-language statement, where it was noted that translation errors had caused misunderstandings regarding Bahçeli’s vision of a “Terror-free Turkey” and its relation to the broader region.

In September, Esenyurt Mayor Ahmet Özer reported on a separate meeting with Bahçeli. During that discussion, Bahçeli reportedly expressed opposition to removing parliamentary immunity for certain political figures and addressed systemic issues within Turkey’s political party structure. Özer also used the occasion to advocate for the rule of law and warned that frequent political party switching could damage public trust in the electoral system.
