Turkish textile and ready-to-wear industry trends

Overview

The Turkish textile and ready-to-wear sector has experienced contrasting developments across different regions and business models. In July, export hubs in Bursa and Mersin reported significant activity. Mersin saw a 163 percent year-on-year increase in ready-to-wear exports, reaching $50.1 million, while Bursa reported July exports of $91 million, led by women’s outerwear.

However, wholesale hubs such as Laleli, Merter, and Osmanbey have faced a severe economic downturn. Industry representatives reported that revenues in these districts have plummeted by 70 percent from a peak of $16 billion. This decline is attributed to rising domestic production costs, which have created a “40 percent price gap” compared to competitors, as well as reduced purchasing power in key markets due to the Russia-Ukraine war and shifting consumer interest toward China.
