Turkish transportation infrastructure development

Turkey’s Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure continues to manage several large-scale infrastructure developments across the country. In Istanbul, the ministry has officially assumed responsibility for the construction of the 17.5-kilometer Ümraniye-Kavacık-Beykoz metro line, which will include 14 stations and an underground depot. The city’s total rail system length has now reached 180 kilometers.

In the Ümraniye district, the Trabzon Millet Bahçesi Junction has been opened, and work has commenced on the Şile Highway Upper Cover and Square Arrangement Project. This initiative includes a 230-meter underpass on the TEM highway designed to divert vehicle traffic, facilitating the creation of 50 acres of green space and pedestrian areas to support urban growth near the Istanbul Finance Centre.

Regional developments have expanded in Samsun, Trabzon, Van, and Konya. In Samsun, construction has begun on a new terminal building for Çarşamba Airport to increase annual passenger capacity. Additionally, work is progressing on a 13.3-kilometer tramway line connecting to the City Hospital and Public Campus, valued at approximately 6.5 billion TL, and the 16.3-kilometer Samsun West Ring Road project, valued at 18 billion TL.

In Van, a presidential decree has transferred the 8.67-kilometer City Hospital-Airport-Municipality tram line project to the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure. In Konya, the Adliye-City Hospital tram line has entered the test driving phase, with plans to eventually expand into a 21.1-kilometer network. In Trabzon, work has begun on a 32-kilometer rail system intended to connect Akçaabat, Ortahisar, and Yomra.

Other national initiatives include the Malatya Ring Road, a 53.5-kilometer project valued at 15 billion lira, as well as tunnel constructions in Antalya and Rize.
