Turkish voter indecision and political instability
Overview
Political instability in Turkey has been marked by a significant rise in undecided voters following corruption allegations. These allegations include municipal scandals and a fund embezzlement case that reportedly affects between 455,000 and one million individuals. This scandal has also been linked to stock market losses, with experts suggesting the impact could reach between 5 and 20 million voters.
As a result of these developments, the rate of undecided voters rose by approximately 15 percent over a 15 day period, reaching roughly 35 percent. This trend has contributed to a decline in support for the AK Party and the Yeni Parti.
Subsequent polling by SONAR Research confirmed high levels of hesitation, reporting that 33.1 percent of participants were undecided, did not specify a preference, or stated they would not vote. SONAR President Hakan Bayrakçı described this level of indecision as unprecedented in his 38 years of research, noting that such data makes predicting election outcomes nearly impossible.
