Tyrol severe storms and flooding

Entities: Tyrol · Sölden · Tirol · Ernst Schöpf · Land Tirol

Overview

The early‑August storm system that battered Tyrol in 2024 intensified on 6–7 August, causing the Tobersbach river in Uttendorf to burst its banks. Floodwaters swept through the village, destroying several bridges, inundating homes and streets, and prompting an extensive emergency response. Fire services in Salzburg and Tirol logged 79 operations, clearing flooded basements, fallen trees and blocked roads. Mudslides spread across the Zillertal, Tux, Brandberg and the Marchklamm near Finkenberg, briefly trapping a resident who was later rescued. Four occupants of a mountain hut in the Bad Gastein valley were evacuated by helicopter, and bridges in the Bad Gastein valley were also destroyed. No injuries were reported.

A similar severe rain event on the night of 6–7 August 2026 again triggered widespread flooding and mudslides across Salzburg and Tirol. The Tobersbach in Uttendorf once more breached its banks, destroying additional bridges and forcing the evacuation of residents and stranded hikers. Mudslides hit the Zillertal, Tux, Brandberg, Marchklamm, Finkenberg and the Bad Gastein valley, destroying five bridges in Bad Gastein and damaging several others. Fire services deployed 79 operations involving 675 personnel from 32 brigades, conducting water pumping, debris removal, road clearance and even fighting a forest fire. An orange weather warning had been issued for the Tiroler Unterland on the morning of 7 August. No injuries were reported despite the extensive property and infrastructure damage.

Authorities continue to assess cumulative damage from both events and are accelerating flood‑protection projects already under development, underscoring the vulnerability of Alpine valleys to rapid‑onset flooding and landslides and the need for upgraded infrastructure and early‑warning systems.
