UAE Emirates ID policy changes

Overview

In June 2026 the UAE Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security detailed the fees and online steps for obtaining or replacing the biometric Emirates ID. The following month it announced that nationals could begin renewing the card up to 12 months before expiry, twice the previous six‑month window.

On 14 July 2026 the extended renewal window came into force, allowing citizens to align ID and passport renewals and easing pressure on travel, school enrolment, medical appointments and other official transactions. A renewed guide reiterated strict photo requirements—35 mm × 45 mm, 600 dpi, plain background—to avoid application rejections.

A week later, the Authority clarified that all documents submitted for ID issuance must be translated by Ministry of Justice‑approved translators and bear the official stamp and registration number. Uncertified or machine translations are rejected and may attract fines or delays. The Emirates ID remains mandatory for UAE citizens, GCC nationals and resident expatriates, serving as the primary proof of identity for banking, education, healthcare, travel and other government services.
