UEC European Road Cycling Championships in Slovenia
Overview
The UEC European Road Cycling Championships are underway in Slovenia, running from October 2 to 7, 2026. Spanning Ljubljana and 12 municipalities in the Gorenjska region, the event is described as the largest cycling spectacle in the country’s history.
As the championships begin, local authorities have implemented road closures, particularly in central Ljubljana, where the U23 road race is scheduled to start at Congress Square. These closures are expected to impact local traffic and certain city bus lines from Friday through Sunday.
In the Women’s U23 road race, Switzerland’s Mara Winter secured the gold medal after an 88.4 km race, narrowly defeating the Netherlands’ Nienke Vinke in a sprint finish. Slovakia’s Viktória Chladoňová took third place. Italian riders Eleonora Ciabocco and Giada Silo also performed well, finishing seventh and ninth respectively.
In the Men’s U23 category, Spain’s Hector Alvarez claimed victory. Slovenian rider Erazem Valjavec finished eighth, marking the top performance for the host nation in that category.
The elite men’s road race serves as a major highlight, featuring a 196.3-kilometer course starting in Ljubljana and concluding in Šenčur. The route includes five climbs up Možjanca. Slovenian cyclist Primož Roglič leads a national team including Matej Mohorič, Jakob Omrzel, Matevž Govekar, Jan Tratnik, Luka Mezgec, Gal Glivar, and Domen Novak. They face a strong field that includes Belgian rider Remco Evenepoel. The championships feature 899 cyclists from 43 nations and include 14 races across various categories. Fan zones and festivities have been organized in Šenčur and at Možjanca to accommodate spectators.
