UK baby loss awareness initiatives
Overview
In the United Kingdom, bereaved parents and healthcare organizations are conducting various initiatives to raise awareness for baby loss, stillbirth, and neonatal death.
Local efforts include community-led awareness weeks and fundraising. In Brightlingsea, author Ellouise Champion organized the town’s first Baby Loss Awareness Week, featuring a ‘Wave of Light’ service and remembrance displays. Additionally, Leigh O'Reilly was shortlisted for the Community Baby Loss Champion Awards 2026 following successful fundraising for the Worcestershire Maternity Bereavement Ward.
As Baby Loss Awareness Week approaches, formal remembrance services are being organized by healthcare trusts and religious institutions. The Western Health and Social Care Trust scheduled services of thanksgiving and acknowledgment in Enniskillen and DerryLondonderry, alongside the installation of remembrance trees at several hospitals. In the Catholic Diocese of East Anglia, a Mass of Remembrance was held at St Edmund’s Catholic Church to provide a space for prayer and reflection regarding the loss of unborn children.
During the awareness week, Havering held a Ceremony of Remembrance at Havering Town Hall. Led by Mayor Councillor Maggie Themistocli, the event featured the lighting of LED candles and the leaving of messages on tree branches to commemorate lost children.
In the North East, the County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust is highlighting specialized bereavement services. These include dedicated bereavement midwives and the Serenity Suite at University Hospital of North Durham, which offers a private space away from maternity wards. Darlington Memorial Hospital has also updated its bereavement room facilities following funding from NHS England. The Trust further provides clinical photography services to assist families in creating lasting memories.
