UK council school infrastructure upgrades

In late July 2026, two UK local authorities announced major school construction projects. Broxtowe Borough Council in Nottingham approved a £25 million expansion of the special-educational-needs Foxwood Academy, adding a new X-shaped building to double capacity. Meanwhile, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council in Wales submitted plans to replace Ysgol Llanhari with a new all-through Welsh-medium school for 910 pupils, featuring extensive sports, childcare and community facilities, slated for completion by May 2030.

A few days later, on 5 August 2026, Aberdeen City Council approved a £27.164 million Condition & Suitability Programme to repair and modernise around 26 schools across the city. The programme includes roof and boiler replacements, security upgrades, toilet and kitchen refurbishments, lighting improvements and lift replacements, aiming to sustain quality facilities for the community.

By late August 2026, further infrastructure developments emerged in Scotland. In East Lothian, councillors approved plans to increase the number of additional support needs (ASN) units in mainstream schools from six to nine, a move expected to provide 122 more specialist places and save approximately £9 million annually in transport costs. Additionally, the Highland Council proposed a £100 million investment to create a new education campus in Thurso. This plan involves merging Pennyland Primary School and Miller Academy Primary School into a single facility with Early Learning and Childcare and Gaelic Medium Education provisions, co-located with a new Thurso High School to serve as a community hub.

Together, these approvals illustrate a broader push by UK local councils to invest heavily in school infrastructure, addressing capacity, modernization and community needs across England, Scotland and Wales.
