UK FCA motor finance redress scheme delayed
Entities: Sheree Howard · Financial Conduct Authority
Overview
The FCA’s mass redress programme for motorists mis‑sold car‑finance agreements continues to be delayed by legal challenges. After the Upper Tribunal hearing was scheduled for February 2027, the regulator confirmed that payments are unlikely before 2027 and urged consumers to lodge complaints now to create a record.
On 26 July 2026 the FCA announced a £2 million advertising campaign aimed at motor‑finance borrowers who may be owed compensation. Running from 27 July to 6 September across TV, radio, print, billboards and social media, the campaign directs consumers to a free template complaint letter on the FCA website. A commissioned survey of 1,000 UK adults with motor‑finance agreements found that 27 % lack confidence to complain without a claims‑management firm, 59 % have made or are considering a claim, and 23 % are unsure of their options; more than 80 % said the template would increase their confidence.
The campaign is intended to improve claim‑making despite the scheme’s partial suspension and ongoing litigation, which the FCA says it will defend robustly.
