UK food manufacturing factory closures

Overview

The UK food manufacturing sector has seen significant restructuring through the closure of major production facilities.

In early September, Kellogg's ceased production at its historic Trafford Park factory in England, ending nearly a century of manufacturing at the site. The company cited inefficient space utilization and high modernization costs as primary drivers for the closure, which resulted in 360 job losses. Production for brands such as Corn Flakes and Rice Krispies is being transferred to a facility in Wrexham, Wales.

Later in the month, Greggs announced a manufacturing overhaul involving the proposed closure of four factories in Enfield, North Lakes, Kelso, and Seaham. This restructuring, which could impact approximately 740 jobs, aims to save an estimated £20 million annually by the 2028 and 2029 financial years. While some sites will cease manufacturing, others will transition into distribution centers or undergo product range reductions.
