UK maritime and logistics infrastructure investment
Overview
Major logistics and port operators in the United Kingdom are undertaking significant infrastructure investments to expand trade capacity and supply chain resilience.
DP World is upgrading its UK port capabilities through the deployment of large quay cranes. At London Gateway, two cranes weighing over 2,000 tonnes each arrived from Shanghai to support a £1 billion expansion project, including a new all-electric berth scheduled for 2027.
At the Port of Southampton, Associated British Ports (ABP) has completed a major quay crane investment program at the DP World terminal. The arrival of two new ship-to-shore (STS) cranes marks the final stage of an infrastructure project with a reported cost between $60 million and $74.9 million. These four new cranes are intended to strengthen the port’s capacity to handle the world’s largest container vessels and support international trade, automotive logistics, and cruise operations. The terminal currently handles approximately two million containers annually.
In addition to crane capacity, Peel Ports Group is investing millions of pounds to develop over one million square feet of new Grade A warehousing. This includes a 100,000 square foot facility at King George V Dock in Glasgow and a 900,000 square foot warehouse in Liverpool, aimed at mitigating potential warehousing shortages.
