UK railway station accessibility upgrades

Overview

Infrastructure projects under the Department for Transport’s ‘Access for All’ scheme are progressing at various UK railway stations to improve accessibility.

At Southend East station, GBR Anglia and contractor Octavius have completed a major milestone involving the installation of concrete and steel components for a new accessible footbridge and lift shafts. Following upcoming fit-out and testing phases, these facilities are expected to enter service in spring 2027.

At Hither Green station, a new footbridge has opened as part of a £28 million programme managed by Network Rail. The project aims to provide full step-free access to all platforms by spring 2027 through the installation of four lifts, new staircases, and a link passageway. The upgrades also include new passenger information systems and environmental restoration efforts in the adjacent nature reserve.
