UK retail product recalls over phthalate risks

Overview

Retailers in the United Kingdom have issued recalls for various bags and purses due to chemical safety concerns.

In early September, Asda recalled three types of women’s handbags—including a front pocket crossbody bag, an opp tote bag, and a black nylon phone bag—after the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) reported excessive concentrations of Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP). These chemicals, used to soften plastics, can potentially cause damage to the reproductive system and violate REACH Regulations.

Following this, Primark issued an urgent recall for a ‘101 Dalmatians Faux Leather Coin Purse’ sold between March and June 2026. The product was found to contain phthalates at levels exceeding permitted limits, breaching both the REACH Enforcement Regulations 2008 and the General Product Safety Regulations 2005.
