Ukraine Shahed Drone Countermeasures Upgrade

Overview

In late June 2026 Ukraine fielded the low‑cost ZIRKA interceptor drone to hunt Russian Shahed loitering munitions, and by shutting down Belarusian relay stations disrupted the drones’ real‑time control. By late July Russia responded by equipping 15‑20 % of its Shahed fleet with jet engines, raising speeds to roughly 500 kph and shortening the reaction window for Ukrainian defenses.

Ukrainian firm SkyFall accelerated its response, unveiling an upgraded P1‑SUN Jetkiller interceptor at the Farnborough Airshow. The Jetkiller reaches 370 kph, incorporates AI‑based terminal guidance, and has reportedly downed more than a dozen jet‑powered Shaheds in battlefield trials. Serial production is slated to begin in August 2026 with a capacity of 50 000 units per month; the original P1‑SUN, introduced in November 2025, has already eliminated over 5 500 Russian drones.

European missile maker MBDA and U.S. defense contractor Lockheed Martin also announced new high‑speed interceptor projects aimed at countering the growing wave of low‑cost drone attacks.
