Ukrainian youth peace programs in Italy continue
Overview
In mid‑July 2026, about twenty teenagers from Zaporizhzhia arrived in Italy for a two‑week “Messaggeri della pace” camp organized by the Ukrainian Greek‑Catholic Church’s apostolic vicariate. They traveled through Lombardy and Trentino to Assisi, where Archbishop Mario Delpini welcomed them as “ambassadors of hope” and emphasized peace as a vocation. Participants such as 21‑year‑old Kateryna and 16‑year‑old Varvara noted the contrast between the war‑torn environment they left and the calm of the camp.
A week later, twenty‑two adolescents from Kherson joined the Caritas Diocesana Ancona‑Osimo programme “È più bello insieme”. Arriving in Ancona on 23 July, they were received by Mayor Daniele Silvetti, Council President Simone Pizzie and Social Policies Assessor Manuela Caucci, and began a two‑week stay that included workshops, beach outings at Palombina, historic‑centre walks and meetings with local parishes, aimed at psychological relief and a sense of normalcy.
The programme concluded in early August. On 3 August the Caritas Diocesana of Ancona‑Osimo, together with the Italian Episcopal Conference, held a farewell celebration at the pastoral centre, marking the end of the fifteen‑day stay for the Kherson youths. The wrap‑up highlighted the cultural visits, sports activities and community engagement provided, underscoring the ongoing charitable and faith‑based effort to offer short‑term refuge, cultural exchange and emotional support to Ukrainian youth refugees in Italy.
