UN-Burkina Faso diplomatic relations
Overview
Following a period of strained relations and the expulsion of previous coordinators, the United Nations appointed Cameroonian diplomat Njoya Tikum as the new Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator for Burkina Faso in July 2026. Tikum formally assumed the role after presenting his credentials to Foreign Minister Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré.
By late August 2026, diplomatic engagement progressed with a meeting between Tikum and Prime Minister Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo. The discussions centered on aligning the UN Cooperation Framework with the government’s RELANCE 2026-2030 Plan. The Prime Minister emphasized that international cooperation must respect national sovereignty, while Tikum stated, “We reaffirm the availability of the entire United Nations System to accompany Burkina Faso, in accordance with its priorities.”
