UN development and governance initiatives in Liberia
Overview
United Nations initiatives in Liberia have focused on social empowerment and structural development. Initially, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) emphasized the need for youth and female empowerment to ensure political stability and sustainable development, noting that over 60 percent of Liberia’s population is under age 35.
Following these advocacy efforts, the Government of Liberia and the UNDP established renewed strategic partnerships to advance decentralization and development financing. These efforts include modernizing County Service Centers, expanding digital governance, and transforming County Development Agendas into investment plans. Additionally, a Core Technical Committee was launched to update the nation’s Development Finance Assessment to better align public and private financing with national priorities.
