Political polarization in the United States has evolved from a phenomenon affecting social trust and personal identities into a broader struggle over systemic institutions and ideological control.

Initial observations highlighted how partisan identity influences social structures, such as civic trust and interpersonal relationships, despite a significant portion of the population identifying as independent or moderate. The political landscape was characterized by complex internal factions within the Democratic and Republican parties.

This division has intensified into a confrontation between the established political order and emerging movements. Efforts by Donald Trump to dismantle systemic institutions have led to accusations of autocratic transformation. Concurrently, groups like the Democratic Socialists of America have gained influence by advocating for the decentralization of power and increased taxation on wealth. These socialist movements face intense opposition from Trump supporters, who characterize them as threats to democracy and capitalism.

As the nation approaches midterm elections, these internal tensions have manifested in specific party strategies and economic debates. The Republican Party has moved to downplay the cost-of-living crisis, with Donald Trump suggesting that the term ‘affordability’ was a concept manufactured by Democrats to weaken his position, even as inflation data shows the PCE index rose 0.2% in July.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Party faces friction between progressives and moderates. Following recent primary victories, progressives are pushing for aggressive populism, such as higher wages and reduced healthcare costs. Moderates, however, express concern that such rhetoric could alienate voters in competitive states by appearing too extreme or anti-business.
