Unlicensed medical practice homicide case in New York
Overview
Luis Rojas Cabrera, 55, faces homicide charges following the July death of 27-year-old Elizabeth Baron at the Bereshit Lifestyle Center in Manhattan. Baron reportedly suffered cardiac arrest after receiving an NAD+ injection, a molecule used in anti-aging treatments, from Rojas Cabrera, who is not licensed to practice medicine in the United States.
Initially charged with reckless endangerment and unauthorized practice of a profession, prosecutors upgraded the charges to murder after a medical examiner ruled the death a homicide. The examiner determined Baron died from a cardiac gas embolism, allegedly caused when Rojas Cabrera mistakenly injected air during the procedure.
Rojas Cabrera has contested the murder charge, suggesting that any air in the heart may have resulted from the manual CPR he performed before emergency services arrived. A Brooklyn court has set bail at $2 million.
