Unusual autumn weather patterns in Spain

Overview

Spain has recently experienced atypical autumn weather conditions characterized by high humidity and unseasonably warm temperatures.

In early October, the country saw increased atmospheric humidity, particularly in the Mediterranean and Cantabrian regions. Meteorologist José Miguel Viñas linked this trend to global warming and warmer ocean waters. In areas such as Seville, humidity levels reached 80%, a figure described as not historically recorded.

By mid-October, a powerful anticyclone brought intense atmospheric stability and high temperatures. Between October 13 and 15, the anticyclonic ridge reached extraordinary intensity at approximately 5,500 meters in altitude, with values exceeding those recorded in more than 99% of October days. Temperatures reached up to 32°C in southern areas.

However, a significant weather shift is expected with the arrival of a DANA (isolated depression at high levels). Meteorological agencies have issued warnings for intense and persistent rainfall beginning Saturday, October 17, primarily affecting coastal and pre-coastal areas.

The Valencian Community faces high risk, with models suggesting extreme precipitation; some estimates predict over 200 liters per square meter, while specific models for the Valencia metropolitan area suggest accumulations could exceed 500 liters over a nine-day period. In Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, authorities warn of heavy rain alongside a sharp drop in temperatures. Emergency services have advised residents to avoid flood-prone areas and exercise extreme caution on roads as the DANA brings widespread instability.
