UPL political challenges in Castilla y León

The Unión del Pueblo Leonés (UPL) has raised several criticisms against the regional government of Castilla y León regarding resource management and budget execution in its provinces.

In late August 2026, the party filed an initiative in the Cortes of Castilla y León to demand explanations concerning housing policies in Zamora. UPL criticized the regional government for what it termed a ‘showcase policy’ regarding social housing rehabilitation, noting that only approximately 17% of the funds allocated for rehabilitating homes for social rental within the Territorial Cohesion Fund were executed in 2025.

By mid-September 2026, the political group shifted its focus to the education sector in León. UPL denounced budget cuts and insufficient human resources in rural schools for the 2026-2027 school year, highlighting protests from families at the CRA de Carucedo.

On September 17, 2026, the party expanded its regional initiatives. In addition to continuing its focus on rural education shortages, UPL demanded the integral repair of the SA-305 road connecting Ledesma with the Zamora provincial border, citing hazardous conditions. The party also called for regional administration support regarding a legal dispute over boundary delimitation between Cabrillanes and Somiedo.

Concurrently, UPL has begun organizational preparations for the 2027 municipal elections in La Bañeza and El Páramo, utilizing institutional visits to structure local candidacies and gather data on municipal needs.
