Urban decline and security challenges in Rimini
Overview
Rimini continues to face social and structural challenges regarding urban decline and public safety. In the Barafonda district, the decline in tourism is marked by the closure of approximately 20 out of 40 local hotels, some of which have transitioned into shelters for the homeless. Residents in the San Giuliano mare neighborhood continue to advocate for infrastructure improvements, specifically requesting the redevelopment of the Marecchia cycle path and an alternative road to via Zavagli to combat feelings of isolation.
Regarding law enforcement and security, the Fratelli d’Italia party has called for more concrete measures to address public safety. Although reported crimes in the province decreased by 10.7% compared to the previous year, the party highlighted that Rimini remains sixth in Italy for crime incidence, with over 5,376 reported crimes per 100,000 inhabitants. They argued that statistical decreases do not mitigate the “public perception of insecurity” among women, the elderly, and families.
To address these concerns, the party is requesting increased staffing for the Questura and more frequent patrols. They are also seeking specific data on the effectiveness of the city’s expanding video surveillance network. Under the leadership of Mayor and Provincial President Jamil Sadegholvaad, the number of surveillance cameras has grown from 44 to 464, with a target of 557 by 2027, supported by investments exceeding four million euros.
