Urban forestry initiatives in Rondonópolis

Overview

The municipality of Rondonópolis, Brazil, has received international and national recognition for its urban forestry and sustainability efforts. The city was awarded the ‘Selo Cidade Amiga das Árvores’ (Tree-Friendly City Seal) by the Brazilian Urban Forestry Society (SBAU) and was named a ‘Tree Cities of the World’ for 2025 by the FAO/United Nations.

Building on these recognitions, the city is expanding its afforestation initiatives through the Municipal Secretariat of Environment, Agriculture, and Livestock (Semmaap). This project uses environmental compensation funds from companies to plant approximately 2,500 tree seedlings monthly along various streets. Additionally, a partnership known as the ‘Muda Sua Vida’ project is distributing 6,000 seedlings to the community to help mitigate heat islands and air pollution.
