Expansion of urban surveillance in Argentina and Mexico
Overview
Municipalities in Argentina and Mexico continue to expand surveillance technology to address public safety and local disturbances.
In Argentina, La Plata is increasing its monitoring capacity to 2,300 devices by installing 1,300 new cameras and 120 kilometers of fiber optics. In San Isidro, a technological overhaul has deployed 300 kilometers of fiber optics to connect 2,600 high-definition cameras utilizing artificial intelligence and advanced analytics. Additionally, the Chaco Legislature is considering legislation to mandate 24-hour audio and video surveillance in geriatric care centers to protect elderly residents.
In Mexico, Ramos Arizpe is adding 100 cameras and mobile security booths to its monitoring infrastructure.
Recent surveillance footage has documented various local incidents. In Mexico City, video from an apartment building in the Coyoacán borough captured two women allegedly engaging in hostile acts against neighbors, including smearing excrement on hallways and attempting to damage locks. In Catamarca, Argentina, cameras recorded an attempted break-in where a man on a bicycle tried to force entry into a building, an incident that follows a series of local thefts and resident complaints regarding insufficient police presence.
