Uruguay OECD engagement and assessment participation
Overview
Uruguay has begun engaging with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) through both specific assessment programs and broader diplomatic exploration.
In early September, the country joined the OECD Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC). Coordinated by the National Institute of Employment and Professional Training (INEFOP), this initiative will evaluate literacy, numeracy, and problem-solving skills in adults aged 16 to 65. The program is scheduled to undergo a pilot phase in 2027, with fieldwork in 2028 and results presented in 2029.
Following this, during the 11th Ministerial Summit of the OECD Regional Programme for Latin America and the Caribbean in Montevideo, Uruguayan officials discussed the potential for closer ties and OECD membership to strengthen international presence and multilateral engagement. Alejandro Sánchez, Secretary of the Presidency, indicated that participating in such platforms would enhance national sovereignty.
