US ETF market on track for record annual launches

Overview

In late July 2026, the U.S. exchange-traded fund (ETF) industry continued a rapid expansion. By July 27, 868 new ETFs had been launched, with single-stock and artificial-intelligence funds leading the surge. Large products such as Global X Robotics & AI, Roundhill Memory ETF (DRAM), and ProShares GENIUS Money Market amassed tens of billions in assets. Analysts noted that while the launch pace was expected to stay high, only a fraction of new funds would survive long-term.

By July 31, the count of new ETFs rose to 953, putting the market on track to approach the all-time annual record of 1,095 set in 2021. Half of the new offerings incorporated derivatives and 85% were active-managed strategies. Leveraged and inverse products more than doubled since the end of 2024. During this period, the Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF posted a 26% total return year-to-date. Analysts warned that increasing product complexity could lead to retail investors misunderstanding product behavior.

By mid-August, projections suggested the U.S. market could reach a record 1,470 launches for the year, surpassing the 2025 record of 1,050. Approximately one-third of new launches were leveraged products. While cryptocurrency-related ETFs initially faced significant challenges—with Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs recording billions in outflows—recent data showed a shift toward positive territory, including $1.1 billion in combined weekly inflows driven largely by BlackRock’s IBIT.

European ETF growth was also highlighted, with retail adoption expected to rise as pension reforms, digital platforms, and sustainable-investing trends evolve. Executives suggest the next five years will be defined by user adoption and fintech-driven distribution models.
