US federal crackdown on fraud and trafficking
Overview
US federal agencies have launched significant operations targeting large scale financial fraud and labor exploitation. In late October, FBI Director Kash Patel announced the results of Operation Blackout, which involved the capture of six fugitives from the agency’s Most Wanted Fraudsters list and the seizure of nearly $17 billion in assets. This operation also reportedly rescued thousands of trafficked workers used in fraudulent schemes.
Following this, the Department of Labor Office of Inspector General released a list of 16 fugitives accused of crimes totaling over $55 million, including work visa fraud, labor trafficking, and money laundering. This announcement coincided with the formation of the Visa Fraud Strike Team, an interagency initiative involving the Departments of Labor, Justice, Homeland Security, and State. One individual, former FBI official Leslie Kaciban, has been arrested in Hungary in connection with allegations of bribery and illegal labor payments, while 15 other suspects remain at large.
