US Generation Z religious identity trends
Overview
A Harris Poll survey of 2,136 U.S. adults indicates that Generation Z is more likely to identify as religious than older generations. Data shows 33% of Gen Z respondents describe themselves as ‘religious’, compared to 22% of Gen X, 19% of millennials, and 18% of baby boomers.
Gen Z also reported the lowest percentage of individuals identifying as ‘neither religious nor spiritual’ at 19%. While baby boomers remain the most likely to report regular individual prayer, Gen Z shows high levels of spiritual engagement, with 88% participating in at least one activity such as prayer, meditation, astrology, tarot, or ritual.
Researchers noted that Gen Z appears to be ‘stacking’ different spiritual practices, often combining traditional religious activities, such as attending church or reading scripture, with modern spiritualities like manifestation.
