US-Russia diplomatic tensions over Ukraine policy

Overview

Former U.S. President Barack Obama criticized the Trump administration, alleging the White House is “bowing to Putin” and betraying Ukraine. Obama claimed the administration is distancing itself from allies like Canada while making concessions to Russia, such as agreements regarding Russian diesel deliveries and the relaxation of certain sanctions.

In response, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova accused Obama of being responsible for the current situation in Ukraine. Zakharova alleged that the Obama administration betrayed Ukraine by promising benefits from “Western democracy” in exchange for abandoning national interests. She further claimed that Obama and then-Vice President Joe Biden were involved in organizing unconstitutional coups and that Biden pressured the EU to impose anti-Russian sanctions in 2014.
