US sanctions against far-left activist groups
Overview
The United States has moved to designate the UK-based activist group Palestine Action as a global terrorist organization. This action follows a July 2025 decision by the UK government to proscribe the group after activists damaged military aircraft. The US designation aims to isolate the group from the global financial system by freezing US-based assets and prohibiting Americans from conducting business with them. US officials allege the group promotes terrorism via social media, potentially influencing tactics within the United States and at the US-Mexican border.
Expanding on these measures, the US Department of the Treasury, through the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), has imposed sanctions on several entities identified as ‘far-left terror networks.’ In addition to Palestine Action, the sanctions target the Italy-based Autistici Inventati and the international organization Masar Badil, which is alleged to act as a front for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). In August 2026, the Treasury Department clarified the specific roles of these entities, noting that Autistici Inventati is accused of providing digital infrastructure and services to violent extremists. Furthermore, the sanctions against Masar Badil have been extended to include its executives, Rawa Alsagheer and Zaid Abdulnasser.
Palestine Action, founded in 2020, has frequently targeted Israel-linked defense companies, such as Elbit Systems, through direct action and property damage. As part of the designation, co-founders Huda Ammori and Richard Barnard face lifetime bans from entering the United States. While US officials claim the group encourages international terrorism, human rights organizations and group founders have criticized the designations as an attempt to ‘criminalize political dissent.’
