US Social Security benefit disbursements

The United States Social Security Administration began its August 2026 disbursement cycle for retirement, survivor, and disability benefits. Payments were distributed in waves based on beneficiary birthdates, with the first round scheduled for August 12.

While monthly payments proceeded as scheduled, SSA trustees highlighted long-term financial risks, noting that the retirement trust fund could face depletion by approximately 2032 if congressional intervention does not occur.

As the September 2026 cycle begins, the SSA continues to distribute payments in waves based on birth dates. The first round of September payments is scheduled for early in the month, followed by a second round for those born between the 11th and 20th on September 16, and a third round for those born on or after the 21st on September 23.

Monthly payment amounts remain determined by factors such as retirement age and lifetime contributions; for instance, a 70-year-old retiree could receive up to $5,181 per month. The program is funded through payroll taxes paid by employees and employers, but trustees reiterate that the retirement fund is projected to run out by 2032 due to an increasing number of retirees and a shrinking workforce unless Congress takes legislative action.
