Ushuaia economic development summit

Public and private sector leaders in Ushuaia convened for the inaugural ‘Líderes del Fin del Mundo’ summit to address economic and productive challenges in Tierra del Fuego.

Vice-Mayor Gabriela Muñiz Siccardi highlighted the need for private investment to foster urban growth and job creation, noting that the municipality utilizes a private initiative regime to evaluate community-beneficial projects. Key sectors identified for development include tourism, fishing, and professional training, alongside leveraging the region’s status as a gateway to Antarctica.

Governor Gustavo Melella emphasized that productive expansion requires strong public services, including education, health, and security. He stated that the state must provide predictability for investors while maintaining the resources necessary to sustain regional growth.

Following these discussions, provincial authorities and labor leaders have moved to address a worsening economic and employment crisis. Governor Melella and Ushuaia Mayor Walter Vuoto met with representatives from the Confederación General del Trabajo (CGT) to discuss how national economic policies are impacting local production and job security.

Labor leaders expressed significant concern regarding the decline in purchasing power and job losses, specifically citing workers at Mirgor. During these negotiations, the CGT emphasized the necessity of protecting local industry and maintaining essential services such as health and education.
