Valencian language promotion and policy
Overview
Efforts to promote the Valencian language have emerged through both grassroots student activism and regional government policy. In late September 2026, the youth organization Joves pel Valencià launched the ‘A la UV… en valencià!’ campaign to protest the perceived marginalization of the language at the University of Valencia. The group highlighted disparities in instruction, noting that Valencian-language offerings in master’s programs accounted for only 3% compared to 86.6% for Spanish, and demanded the university reach a target of at least 50% Valencian-language instruction by the 2026-2027 academic year.
Following these linguistic concerns, the Generalitat Valenciana and the Acadèmia Valenciana de la Llengua (AVL) announced a commitment to cooperate on language promotion. Despite political pressure from the Vox party and previous budgetary constraints facing the AVL, the regional government acknowledged the academy as an “essential part of the Valencian institutional architecture.” The two entities agreed to a “flexible” normalization process based on academic rigor and dialogue to support linguistic policies.
