Valladolid theater production cancellation controversy

Overview

The theater company Proyecto 43-2 had its production, ‘Federico. No hay olvido, ni sueño: carne viva’, canceled in Valladolid. The play, which explores themes of memory and the disappeared through the lens of mass grave excavations, was scheduled for October 24 as part of a cycle organized by the Fundación Siglo under the Castilla y León regional government.

The regional administration cited ‘unpostponable works’ as the reason for the cancellation. However, the production company noted that these works lacked specified dates and had not prevented other scheduled performances. The cancellation was communicated via email on October 2, despite 70% of tickets having already been sold.

Spain’s Minister of Equality, Ana Redondo, accused the PP and Vox parties of censorship, suggesting the decision was politically motivated due to the upcoming electoral period. The cultural center involved is managed by the Junta de Castilla y León, with the regional Ministry of Culture currently led by Alberto Díaz Pico of the Vox party.
