Overview
A series of vandalism incidents targeting Croatian war veteran memorials and national symbols has sparked significant political and social tension.
In Zagreb, unknown perpetrators defaced murals dedicated to Homeland War veteran units and the official coat of arms of the Republic of Croatia near the former Vjesnik skyscraper. The vandals left insulting messages and signatures associated with anti-fascist groups. Political leaders and the Minister of Veterans condemned the act, while veteran associations demanded legal action against those they described as ‘haters of Croatia’.
Following these events, a mural on the island of Korčula dedicated to Jean-Michel Nicolier, a defender of Vukovar, was also vandalized. Veterans' associations have since filed formal complaints with state institutions, linking the Korčula incident to the previous acts in Zagreb. These groups have characterized the vandalism as part of a systematic effort to disparage the Homeland War and undermine Croatian cultural and religious values through ideological provocation.
