Varese motorway access roadworks and disputes

Overview

The terminal section of State Road 707, which connects the A8 motorway to the Varese city center via the largo Flaiano roundabout, reopened to traffic on September 13 following a summer-long closure. The road had been closed since June 25 to allow Anas to install new acoustic barriers made of sound-absorbing concrete blocks. The closure resulted in significant traffic congestion and forced drivers to use alternative exits.

Following the reopening, the Municipality of Varese formally disputed the closure with Anas, labeling it unauthorized. Local authorities stated that while the necessity of the roadworks was not in question, the lack of coordination and failure to follow previous agreements made at the Prefecture caused severe disruptions to the city's traffic network during the return to school and local business activities.
