Vehicle fires on Dutch and Belgian roads
Entities: Dutch police · Kaatsheuvel · Tiel
Overview
In early July, a series of vehicle fires disrupted traffic in both Belgium and the Netherlands. A green Renault Kangoo crashed into a roundabout in Ieper, Belgium, igniting after pulling a traffic sign, while separate incidents in the Netherlands saw cars burn on the A4 near Leiderdorp, at the Oortjesburg in Nieuwegein, and on a roundabout in Tiel. Authorities treated the events as accidents under investigation, focusing on eyewitness accounts and CCTV footage.
By early August, similar blazes in the Dutch towns of Tiel and Kaatsheuvel involved parked vehicles that were set alight within minutes of each other. Police quickly labeled the incidents as suspected arson, cordoning off the scenes and seeking video evidence. The shift from unexplained fires to deliberate ignition heightened investigative efforts, but the exact motives and perpetrators remained unknown.
