Overview

The municipality of Chania has initiated a large-scale project to restore its Venetian heritage sites. Initially, the city entered the tender phase for a €22 million restoration of the Venetian Young Men site, funded by the EU ‘Environment and Climate Change 2021–2027’ programme.

This effort has progressed to the launch of a tender process for the restoration, enhancement, and repurposing of the seven Venetian Neoria in the Old Town. With a budget exceeding €20.7 million, local authorities have described this initiative as the ‘largest cultural heritage project in the city’s history’. The project is a collaborative effort involving the Municipality of Chania, the Municipal Port Fund, the Ministry of Culture, the Technical University of Crete, and the Region of Crete. Bids are due by October 20, 2026, with construction expected to begin in October 2027 and continue for three years.
