Venezuela earthquake aid distribution and tracking dispute

Overview

After the June 24, 2026 earthquake that devastated La Guaira, the governor of Nueva Espirita coordinated a 130‑tonne humanitarian shipment that was moved by ferry from Puerto La Cruz to La Guaira and distributed inland with municipal, security and tourism officials. Panama’s mayor Mayer Mizrachi attached Apple AirTag devices, showing four tags in La Guaira and one in Maturín, prompting accusations of diversion. Vice President Diosdado Cabello rejected the claim, and Venezuelan police, intelligence and military agencies confirmed the aid arrived in La Guaira and later was taken by a disaster‑affected beneficiary who relocated to Maturín. The Ministry of Communication accused the mayor of manipulation, while Panama pledged further assistance, including a 16‑tonne load.

In July 2026 regional governors broadened relief. Governor Arnaldo Sánchez of Mérida held an outreach day in Sucre municipality, providing food, medicine, education, cultural activities and earthquake‑preparedness training—including pet sterilisation—to more than 600 vulnerable families. Governor Marisel Velásquez of Nueva Esparta distributed 200 water‑storage tanks across Antolín del Campo, Gómez, Marcano, Díaz and Villalba, and reported progress on the Turimiquire reservoir and other water‑distribution measures.

On 14 July Governor Ernesto Luna of Monagas inaugurated a Monagas Solidarity Support Network with medical and scientific professional bodies to deliver intra‑family aid, psychosocial care, school reintegration and social stabilization to earthquake‑affected households. By mid‑July the network had assisted 612 individuals from 174 families, covering about 70 % of the aid allocated for La Guaira‑origin families now residing in Monagas.
