Venezuela public health and disease surveillance initiatives

Overview

Venezuela has initiated several public health strengthening measures in collaboration with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).

Initially, the Ministry of People's Power for Health launched a national vector control plan. This initiative focuses on managing diseases such as dengue, malaria, Zika, Chikungunya, and Chagas disease through entomological surveillance, integrated vector management, and community participation. The plan also includes an operational roadmap to intensify containment efforts in communities affected by a July 24 earthquake.

Following this, the country began implementing an epidemic intelligence system to enhance its public health infrastructure. This includes training to establish a National Event Detection Center for timely emergency responses. Supported by technical assistance from Germany’s Robert Koch Institute, the strategy aims to unify surveillance criteria and utilize both official data and open-source mechanisms, such as social networks, to improve the detection of outbreaks and epidemics.
