Via Francigena development and association involvement

Overview

The Via Francigena pilgrimage route is seeing increased institutional engagement and development efforts across Italy. The Emilia-Romagna region has officially joined the European Association of Via Francigena Routes (AEVF), a move approved by regional legislation to facilitate collaboration with European institutions and international organizations. This membership aims to support the sustainable development of the route, which is currently a candidate for UNESCO World Heritage status.

In the Sannio region, the municipality of Vitulano is leading a network of 22 municipalities to enhance the Via Francigena del Sud. Supported by over 1.5 million euros from the 2021-2027 Development and Cohesion Fund, this initiative focuses on improving accessibility, services, and pilgrim hospitality. Additionally, local leadership is participating in the AEVF general assembly to discuss the role of European pilgrimage routes in cultural and tourism development.
