Video conferencing platform interoperability developments

Overview

Major video conferencing providers are expanding interoperability between different meeting platforms and hardware systems.

In early October, Google and Microsoft introduced interoperability for Android-based conference room hardware. This update allows Google Meet devices to join Microsoft Teams meetings and vice versa, reducing the need for users to utilize personal laptops when room hardware is incompatible with a specific platform. While functional, the integration does not provide the full suite of native platform features.

By late October, Microsoft and Zoom announced a new initiative called ‘Cross-Platform Meeting Connect’. This feature aims to enhance the connection between Teams Rooms and Zoom Rooms by supporting dual-display functionality, HDMI content sharing, participant rosters, and synchronized muting. While the current focus is on the Microsoft and Zoom integration, developers expect to support additional platforms in the future.
