Vietnam aviation infrastructure and connectivity development

Overview

Vietnam is advancing its aviation sector through both infrastructure planning and efforts to expand domestic flight networks. The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) is coordinating with the Ministry of Construction to refine the master plan for Can Tho International Airport, aiming to integrate it with a free trade zone and aviation logistics center to serve as a regional transport hub.

In Quang Tri province, officials are discussing cost-support mechanisms to attract airlines to the newly completed Quang Tri airport, including potential subsidies for charter flights to mitigate initial losses.

To bolster regional connectivity, the CAAV has issued a formal request to six domestic carriers—Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet, Pacific Airlines, Vietravel Airlines, Bamboo Airways, and Sun PhuQuoc Airways—to review and expand their flight networks for the 2026–2027 period. The directive instructs airlines to evaluate current routes, research the restoration of suspended services, and increase flight frequencies. A primary goal is the development of new direct flights between provinces to connect major economic and tourism hubs, thereby reducing reliance on major transit hubs and lowering passenger costs. Airlines are required to submit specific implementation plans to the authority by November 10, 2026.
