Vietnam diplomatic and security expansion
Overview
Vietnam is expanding its diplomatic and security footprint through both regional and intercontinental engagements. On the intercontinental level, the Peruvian Ambassador to Vietnam has characterized the nation as a “strategic bridge” connecting Asia with Latin America, noting a significant rise in trade between Vietnam and the Latin American and Caribbean region from $11 billion in 2015 to nearly $42 billion over the last decade.
Regionally, Vietnam is deepening its Enhanced Strategic Partnership with the Philippines. Discussions between Vietnamese officials and Philippine National Security Council advisor Eduardo S. L. Oban Jr. have focused on maritime defense, regional peace under UNCLOS 1982, and cooperation against transnational crime. Additionally, President To Lam has engaged in bilateral discussions with Mexican political representatives to strengthen ties with Mexico.
