Vietnam international trade and export developments
Overview
Vietnam is pursuing various international trade objectives, focusing on both bilateral cooperation and specific export growth.
In discussions with Bangladesh, officials are working toward a bilateral trade target of US$2 billion, building upon the approximately $1.2 billion reached in 2025. Cooperation areas include agriculture, technology, logistics, and health, alongside efforts to establish direct air links.
Simultaneously, Vietnam’s footwear and handbag exports to the United States exceeded $8 billion during the first eight months of 2026. Total exports for the footwear and bag industry reached $19.54 billion during this period, representing a 2.43% increase compared to the previous year. While footwear growth was relatively low, the segment for handbags, suitcases, and umbrellas saw an 11.51% increase.
The seafood sector is also showing significant movement. Tuna exports to Russia surged by 72% in the first seven months of 2026, reaching approximately $33.4 million. Additionally, pangasius exports to the United Kingdom reached $43 million in the first seven months of 2026, a 23% increase driven by demand for value-added products such as fish burgers and breaded fillets.
Other sectors include pepper exports, which rose 14.2% year-on-year to over 190,000 tons in the first eight months of 2026. To support a total trade volume of $770.14 billion reached during the same period, major institutions such as Vietcombank, Sacombank, and TPBank have launched credit packages to assist exporters with logistics and working capital. Notably, Vietcombank has deployed a 50 trillion VND credit program specifically targeting exports and manufacturing.
As of mid-September 2026, domestic pepper prices have remained stable at approximately 137,000 to 141,000 VND/kg. In the livestock sector, pork prices saw slight increases in Northern provinces like Hung Yen and Lang Son, reaching up to 60,000 VND/kg, while prices in the South and Central regions remained steady.
